Last Fiddle from Don Messer Estate being auctioned
Anonymous writes "The last of Don Messer's fiddles is being auctioned in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia on Sunday, July 19. It is a circa 1900 copy of a Bergonzi violin that was part of Messer's collection of more than a dozen fiddles. Messer had loaned this fiddle to his fiddler friend Roddy Dorman, who used it to play harmony on the last three albums recorded by Messer. "The instrument has been consigned to the auction by Don Messer's daughter and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her stating that the fiddle was owned and played by her father" said auctioneer Blain Henshaw. "At the auction, the fiddle will be demonstrated by award winning New Brunswick fiddler, Ivan Hicks. " This year is the centenary of Don Messer's birth (May 9, 1909) and Hicks is including a musical tribute to Don Messer in all his appearances. This last fiddle from the Messer estate will be sold at approximately 12:30 noon Atlantic time at the Legion Community Center in Annapolis Royal.
Absentee, e-mail or phone bids can be accomodated by contacting the auctioneer. More details are available at www.henshaw.ca/auction or by contacting Blain Henshaw before July 15 at (902) 462-7175.
